    Can't Control Mouse Pointer (2003)

On my wife's computer she is having a problem when in a number of different .doc files. The mouse pointer becomes uncontrollable. If you move the mouse, the cursor does not move for one or two seconds and then jumps to a new location, usually far past where you wanted it to go. If is start task manager, the CPU seems to be being used about 50% and Winword.exe is the program that seems to be using it (its usage bounces between 5% and 70%). The idle process is the only other process that uses any CPU. This utilization continues even if I don't do anything (I have let it sit and watched for as long a 5 minutes). Nothing like this happens in any other program, or in Word with an empty document, so I don't think it is a problem with the mouse. Any suggestions?

Have you tried Phil Rabichow's <!post=Systematic Approach to Behavioral Problems in Word (97/2000),197827>Systematic Approach to Behavioral Problems in Word (97/2000)<!/post> on your wife's PC?

I've only seen such problems when either the mouse needs a cleaning, or the mouse needs to be replaced.

Re: Can't Control Mouse Pointer (2003)

OK, that narrowed down the problem a bit. Deleting tmp files didn't help, but starting WinWord with the /a parameter does make the problem go away. However, I still can't find what is causing the problem. Renaming Normal.dot to Normal.old doesn't help. I can't find any macros in any of the files. Using the ddeauto field shows only one addin (Microsoft Word East European Fonts Tool), but shows that it is NOT selected. Using the ListAddins VBA procedure also only shows that one addin. Looking at addins in VBE shows no addins at all. Any suggestions where to look next?

Does turning off spelling and grammar checking as you type (in Tools | Options...) help?

If your wife has Norton Anti Virus, let her turn off the Office Plugin (Options > Other > Miscellaneous in the NAV console)

    No, neither of those help.

Starting to run out of ideas. Does your wife use Word as mail editor for Outlook? If so, does it help if she turns this off (in Outlook)?

Yes she does, but turning it off does not help. BTW, when having the problem, if I do something in Word that pops up a menu or dialog box, the problem goes away until the menu or dialog box is dismissed. If anyone else has any ideas, feel free to jump in.

Re: Can't Control Mouse Pointer (2003)

Is the problem restricted to certain Word docs or just ones that are not empty? If you were to delete the contents of the one of these problem files and then start typing does the problem remain?

Thanks for the suggestions. It will be tomorrow before I will be able to get on my wife's system to try them out.
