    Postscript font (WordXP)

In one of my documents a postscript font has appeared (called 'TimesNewRomanPS-BoldItalicMT'). It prints out fine on a postscript printer, but it will not print on the ordinary printers.

I want to eliminate this problem. Is there a way to stop fonts from being added, or to get rid of fonts not in the template?

Has someone else edited the document, or was text with that font pasted from another document? Those would be the best explanations for how an otherwise unused font might slip in. There is a font substitution dialog that lets you identify a TrueType font to substitute for printing on other printers (and for viewing on screen), but as you say, it would be better simply to change the font to one that all printers will be able to handle.

As for making printer-specific fonts unavailable in the toolbar drop-down and Font format dialog, I'm not sure whether that is possible.

I am not able to "Find" the font using the Find dialog box, because it doesn't appear in the list.

Is there a way to detect if there are fonts used in a document other that the standard fonts? For example, all the styles are based on 'Times New Roman' and 'Arial'. So, if I can find a way to find other fonts then that would be a great help.

You might see if unchecking 'embed true type fonts', under Tools|Options|Save helps. I note this option is checked for your document. Apart from anything else, unchecking this option makes for smaller files. It also avoids problems that crop up when you try to edit text formatted in the embedded fonts when, as in your document's case, only the in-use characters have been embedded.

These threads were very helpful. By using the Tools/Options/Compatibility Tab/Font substitution button, I can find out if there are any uninstalled fonts in the document. Or, to check for uninstalled fonts I just run the following macro:

    Application.Dialogs(wdDialogFontSubstitution).Show

If there are no uninstalled fonts then it says so, otherwise it allows you to substitute the fonts.
