    drive not recognized? (XP)

This is perplexing! I have a Sony External DVD burner. It has been working for 2 years and still works. On one computer, the 2 DVD authoring programs (Adobe Premiere Pro and Sonic's MyDVD) do not recognize its existence. The drive works fine to play DVDs. Roxio Easy Media Creator 7 does recognize the drive to copy a dvd. Windows does recognize the drive but calls it a cd drive in My Computer. I do not know if this means anything.
I connected the drive to another computer that has Adobe Premier Pro. It did recognize the drive as one that the program could burn to. Therefore, there must be an incorrect setting on the first computer.
Any suggestions? Thank you very much.

Are BOTH machines USB 2 or is the one that is NOT working to full power a USB 1 machine?

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.
