Constant Network Traffic

I'm not sure whether this is the correct forum but if not, I'm sure one of the mods will move it.

I posted a question in the Safe Computing forum several days ago regarding the constant network traffic which is being generated since I switched my firewall from Sygate to Zone Alarm Pro. <!profile=Argus>Argus<!/profile> directed me to this ZA forum which basically said "don't worry about it". As this activity doesn't seem to be slowing anything down, that response is probably correct, BUT I'd like to know what is generating this traffic. I am running XPP SP2 fully patched, networked behind a Linksys router with a DSL modem and running NAV 2006, Spybot, Spyware Blaster, AdAware, MS Anti Spyware. I have set up both of my network connections (internet gateway and Lan) to display icons in the system when they are connected.

Since the switch from Sygate to ZAP, the LAN icon indicates continuous traffic (it NEVER stops) and the ZA traffic icon indicates the same. The Internet Icon on the other hand, only flashes when there is actual internet traffic (either browsing or retrieving or sending e-mail). If I view the Status of the LAN connection, packets are constantly being sent and received. I have looked at the processes running in Task Manager, but nothing seems obvious there. Messenger is disabled. While I realize that there are probably many applications which are connecting from time to time (checking automatically for updates for example), they cannot be connecting continuously 24 hours per day.

Does anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening or what may be generating this traffic? As I said, it doesn't seem to be having any performance impact, but the ZA traffic indicator and the LAN indicator are driving me .

    John,

You can poke around Sysinternals Freeware - Networking Utilities and other parts of Sysinternals to see if any of their stuff will help you identify what is happening.

Thanks Joe. I'll snoop around there and see if there's any tool that may help.
