Can you expand the database for Outlook (2002 SP3) (10.6515.6714)

I am trying to convert from using a custom-made Access "contacts" database to using Outlook. Unless I am overlooking a feature in Outlook, Outlook doesn't provide for creating either an address block or a salutation based on the first names of both husband and wife. I would like the address label to read "Jim and Ann Smith";or in the case of some of my friends "Jim Smith and Ann Jones". I would be willing to hand-enter the salutation, but there is noplace to put it, aside from using one of the pre-defined fields such as "government ID". My past experience is that this is problematic: I will forget how I did it, or the field(s) that I choose to use will turn out to be used by Outlook in special ways that aren't apparent right now!

    1. Is there any way to add new fields to the Outlook contacts database?
    2. Any clues as to which fields are safe to use for information that is different from the original intent of Outlook?
    3. Do later versions of Outlook solve this problem by providing better support for husbands and wives using different last names?

    Thanks for any help,
    Bob Chapman

Well, to the best of my imperfect knowledge ...

    1. You could also use the User1 -User4 Fields provided, or, yes, you can add custom Contacts Fields, but they don't interact with the standard mail merge and data export wizards (not sure about User1 through User4). So systematic access to user-created custom fields is available only through VBA ContactItem.UserProperties Collection.

    2. You can use the Contact Spouse Field (Details tab), but that comes with it's own set of issues, since Titles like "Mr. and Mrs.", "Mr. and Prof." are going to be a maintenance issue.

    3. No. And I is one, the bride keeps her own surname. Helps with telemarketers though. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>
