    Webhelps

If I wanted to learn all about how I could make automated mailing lists, and set up guestbooks and search facilities for a website, etc., and not only how to do this, but what prerequisites were needed, etc etc etc, who or where could I ask?

Can you clarify what you want in the way of a mailing list?
Do you mean a web-based forum that forwards copies of posts to all on the mailing list, or just a mail server that will handle the mailing list?

For general questions on web design, I would suggest the HTML forum, unless you are using (or propose to use) Frontpage, in which case the FrontPage forum!

Just a mail server that will handle the mailing list...The thing that seems to be in common with these types of things is they all involve cgi, permissions, scripts, etc. I know I can go to sites on the web which will host such apps for me (free, and thus with advertising), but I want to find out how to go about this myself, and work out whether it's viable...I'll check out the HTML forum!

    OK.
Can you re-post the mail server question in the Servers: Exchange / Mail / Fax / IIS forum - I've got a suggestion myself but you will then also benefit from replies from all those who may skip this forum.
If you can also give an idea of what facilities you need (if indeed you know!) and number of subscribers you envisage, it will get it off to a reasonable start.

    Re: Webhelps

Thanks again for all the suggestions. They've been good, but it's made me realise how I need to explain what I want more clearly, so here goes...

Most of the sites have been ones where you

1)sign up, and have access to their scripts hosted on their server for free (and including advertising), and simply provide your email and other details of your site.

    OR...

2)Download a pre-written package of scripts, throw them into the cgi-bin and follow some installation instructions.

What I really want is to learn how to write the scripts myself, so that I don't have to put up with advertising material, so that I know what I'm doing, and so that I can create new things or modify them at my leisure, without being dependent on other people.

Perhaps the answer is simply that I need to learn how to use a scripting language (eg. Perl) and then I will be able to do exactly what I want. Perhaps not. If somebody can tell me what I need to know before I can write these guesbook and mailing list and search form 'programs" myself, please! That's the bottom line in what I'm after.

    Re: Webhelps

After I posted my reply I thought about what you had asked and realized that creating all this from scratch is what you might be asking for.

One site that not only taught me almost all I know about html and the like is <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.htmlgoodies.com>htmlgoodies.com</A>. I remember there being a tutorial about how to set up a guestbook, cgi bin and other cool features... do a search for the things you're looking to learn and it should come up.

I found that using bravenet.com took out the hassle with as little intrusive advertising as possible.

    hope that helps

Yes! You're exactly right! What I want is to know how to create all this stuff from scratch. (Hopefully that's a bit clearer now!) I've had a quick look at html goodies, and it looks like exactly the sort of thing I'm after, so thanks.

If anyone else knows of sites like this (beyond just html, which I'm ok with; more advanced step-by-step instructions), please let me know...

I'm not into html, but have you tried KT's home page, the link is part of her signature. The links page looks like it may be of some help.
