    Converting .wmv to .avi

I just downloaded Nero's "Package 2" which has Nero Vision included in its array of programs in order to convert 3 .wmv files to .avi format. I really don't have much use for the program other than this one project so I am reluctant to install a 37 meg package just to do this and then perhaps not being able to uninstall the programs afterward without having to uninstall the entire Nero suite of programs which I already have installed (6.6xxx) and which I regularly use (Package 1 and InCD).

    1) Does anyone know if these programs in Package 2 can be uninstalled without having to uninstall everything Nero?
    2) Is there a better and free program that will convert .wmv files to .avi format that is standalone so it can be removed after I'm finished with the project?

You can do this with the Windows Movie Maker application that's included with Windows XP.

    - Simply add the desired WMV file to the timeline (or storyboard)
    - Choose File | Save Movie File
    - Select "My Computer"
    - Specify filename and location
    - Click "Show more choices..."
    - Select "Other Settings", choose "DV-AVI"

Of course, the resulting file will be much larger than the source WMV... That's the nature of the beast.

Also, I use Nero 6.6x for various tasks and it works very well without wanting to take over my system. I'm not sure what concerns you have with it? The only thing I would suggest avoiding from Nero is their custom Media Player. I can't remember which package it comes in, but I remember that it's in one by itself.

    Hope this helps!

    Mark,

Thanks for the tip about using Windows Movie Maker. I had forgotten that I even had this program since I have never worked with any type of video before. It worked fine as according to your destructions. And you were certainly right about the converted file being MUCH bigger than the original.

My concern was that "Nero Vision", which is the application to use when working with videos comes in a "Package" that includes many other video editing applications. The package is 37 megs unpacked and all I would want would be the one program, Nero Vision Express. Then when I finished converting these 3 items, I would probably never use it again and I was concerned that I would not be able to uninstall Nero Vision along with all the other video applications without having to also uninstall the other Nero programs I have already installed and use on a regular basis. Put simply, my concern is if I were to install this "Package 2", then the programs would be immovably integrated with the previously installed Nero components and I wouldn't be able to remove them without having to uninstall everything. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

I have installed the complete set of Nero 6 products on this PC. When I go to add/remove programs I see a single entry for Nero Suite and clicking Change/Remove brings up this dialog box.

There's a whole lot of software that will do this. Just run this search:
