Converting PICT images to gif or jpeg

I have been given a large number of images in the PICT (Mac) format to incorporate into PowerPoint lectures. I am running Windows XP Pro SP2. Any suggestions for a free or inexpensive image converter which will allow me to open these files in a Windows-friendly format?
I would be very grateful for your advice!

Well, two that I have are probably not what you want to hear, but it's early in the day... Paint Shop Pro WILL open those files (not free! - $99) and when I look in IrfanView at the list of filetypes, it does not list your files (free). Hang on...

Re: Converting PICT images to gif or jpeg

I'm gonna make another post rather than edit. Wow! I went Googling and so far haven't found any freebies. All that I saw were programs in the $50 - $150 range. Then I got to thinking, won't PowerPoint read the PICT files directly? Since I'm retired and hardly ever use Office any more, my version is Office 2000 and the Help in PP says this:

Macintosh PICT graphics filter

The Macintosh PICT graphics filter (Pictim32.flt) is used to import Macintosh PICT graphics. Rename your Macintosh PICT files with the .pct extension when you copy them to a computer that uses Windows so that PowerPoint for Windows can recognize the files as PICT graphics. For example, if you have a graphics file named Bear on the Macintosh, you should rename the file to Bear.pct before you insert the file into a PowerPoint presentation for Windows.

Thanks for the quick reply. For once ,Googling left me in the dark. I tried to open with PSP (now Corel) X and failed- error message tells me that "this is not a valid PICTOR/ PC PAINT PIC file". I need to do some homework on this one!

I have just had a play with AnyToJpeg 1.3.2 I found a pict file on the web and have just done a conversion to jpeg format. It is trial software/shareware but it may get you out of a fix if you need this presentation on the PDQ

Am downloading the trial now- if it does the trick I think it is a reasonable price to convert 5 at a time- will be well worth the investment to save time and sanity. Thank you.

Re: Converting PICT images to gif or jpeg

That was a great recommendation, Jezza. The available version of the software refused to open the PICT files, so I emailed support. Within a few hours and an exchange of two emails, I received two successive updates which the software creator(s) worked on until the files were able to be opened. That is what I would call brilliant customer support! Oh that it were the rule rather than a rare and beautiful exception...........I have purchased the software.
With thanks to you and BigAl for the suggestions.

Well thank you for the recommendation and feed back. With that, this software is staying in my "little toolbox" of fixes.

Not me, man. I only went as far as "some college..." (but, I was raised a Roman Catholic and an altar boy - some Latin required)
