(Edited by skitterbug on 29-Dec-05 13:25. Added a bit more to my post and fixed an error while I was at it! :-))
Jezza,

I've used GIMP a little bit and like the program but I've never made icons with it. It is freeware but it is a bit complicated. I did find a tutorial however that looks interesting and thought I'd post it for you to check out.

ps: While I was checking out GIMP, I found a neat site with lots of helpful links to articles that I must investigate for myself! Looks good to me!

Open the file with MSPaint, Then save it via File>Save As>Save As Type>Select 24-bit Bitmap
Rename the extension to "ico", That's all there is to it.

Wow, never realised that....it appears that the backgrounds go black...will that mean it is transparent when viewed?

    Hey Jezza,

I just found that Irfanview will do the same thing! And when you save it, it gives you the option to choose the transparent colour!! Neat!

    Hi Jezza

There are various levels to which you can take this process, as you've discovered trying the suggestions so far. Apart from the bitmap image itself, there are the issues of transparency color and inverse color, as well as storing images at multiple resolutions within the single .ICO file. The best I've used in the past is SnIco Edit. I think its license terms may have changed, but there is still a SnIco Edit 1.5a ware version available.

    Re: Icon Builder

    Hi Alan

Thanks for this, I shall check it out.

I have been playing around with a small favicon for the website I am developing. It is a three coloured affair, brown, green and black and I suppose white would be a fourth if I used it for a background. My preference is to have it transparent. I created it in Fireworks, but of course as soon as I reviewed it in MSPaint it turned white.

In the interim period I "borrowed" Lex and noted that when he arrived on my desktop his icon was himself but when I did my own I just got a windows standard. Having never played with icons before, I was assuming I had done something wrong even though my favicon viewed in the address bar.

I appear to be moving into a grey area between forums here.

    Re: Icon Builder

Thanks Waggers old boy. I eventually did it in my old favourite Fireworks as a 24 bitmap-better the devil you know. I tend to shy away from those bits of so called free software that feel the need to provide adverts and the like. Maybe others feel differently.
