Word 2002 Table Formatting

If I apply a format eg Bold, to a blank cell in a Table in Word 2002 and then enter data the data in that cell takes on the formatting...fine. But if I enter data in a cell, then select it, and then apply formatting eg Bold, all data in the whole table formats Bold. If I then click Undo the Bold format applied to all the other data disappears leaving the selection formatted Bold. Peculiar! Is it a bug? Anybody else had this problem? I tried Detect and Repair without result.

Re: Word 2002 Table Formatting

Say what? I thought that control had only to do with recognizing email-like syntax for a table. From the help file for that control...
"Creates a table when you type a series of hyphens and plus signs, such as +----+----+. Word creates a column for each pair of plus signs (+)."

What does that have to do with formatting of font styles?

I can't reproduce the posters problem even with that control turned on. Are you sure that's a fix?

Re: Word 2002 Table Formatting

The behaviour is due to the feature, Tools|AutoCorrect Options|AutoFormat As You Type|Apply as you type|Tables being checked. If you uncheck it this peculiar behaviour will go away. The Ctrl-Z (Undo) undoes the last action of Word, viz AutoFormat .... as above.

Hi Lenny:
It's Tools/AutoCorrect/Autoformat as you type/ & untick Define styles based on your formatting (rather than Tables).

Re: Word 2002 Table Formatting

Oh, I always have that option turned off. I'm a big styles user and it gets the way big time.

But as to Roger's glich, I still cannot replicate it even with that option turned on. I've experimented several ways and cannot make formatting work like he's experiencing. Can you?

He says to...
- "enter data in a cell"
- "select it" (I assume "it" is the text, but also tried cell selection.)
- "apply Bold"

Result...
- "all data in the whole table formats Bold"

Did you get it to do that?

Re: Word 2002 Table Formatting

It might be the automatic updating of a style.

Suppose all text in a table is formatted with a paragraph style named TableStyle. This style has "Automatically update" turned on. Now, if you select a cell or a paragraph in a cell and make it bold, the TableStyle style will be updated to be bold. As a result, all text in the table will become bold.

Hi Lenny:
Spoke too soon (or actually before I thought) . Can I blame it on the wine that I'm drinking? It's Format/Style/Modify & "Automatically update" is ticked for the style specified in the table cell. Thanks for checking up on this.

I totally agree with you, Phil, in that feature being a possible culprit. A point I was about to get around to is that Roger may have left out a key piece of information like he was using a style. He may not even be aware of it. I wonder if he would come back on and verify that. Automatic updating of a style is not the default setting. I'm curious now.
