What kind of file names do the copies have? If they are short nonsense name starting with a tilde (~), they might be temp files that Word failed to clear after a document was closed because it crashed or because it lost track of the original location (File>Save As sometimes can leave stranded temp files in older versions of Word, not sure about 2003).

More info: Description of how Word creates temporary files (MSKB 211632)

not the problem--There were originally only 9 named files in my documents. now there are many each is named "copy of file my friends", copy 2 of file my friends, copy 79 of file my friends, copy of copy 34 of file my friends. etc. (my friends being an example of a legitimate file name.)

The copy of, copy 2 of, is similar to how Windows Explorer names files that are copy/pasted into the same folder. It's not how Word normally names files. In fact, Word normally will just overwrite your old file, after prompting you, of course. I don't use Word 2003 much, so perhaps it behaves differently than earlier versions. Hopefully someone with 2003 can chime in. Meanwhile, do you have any add-ins or customizations that affect saving?? Any special backup routines?

In addition to Jefferson's suggestions, check out Phil Rabichow's <!post=Systematic Approach to Behavioral Problems in Word (97/2000),197827>Systematic Approach to Behavioral Problems in Word (97/2000)<!/post> to see if it helps you to find the cause of the problem.

Have you tried the suggestion that Hans offered in <post#=546,167>post 546,167</post#> ?

I'm guessing you don't have "Always create backup copy" turned on either?
