    Emulators and QEMU (XP-Pro-SP-2)

    What the heck are emulators?

Am I reading the info right? That with an emulator fools like me can run test, beta, or trial software without actually impacting their "actual" system and setup?

I was at a site about QEMU

Surely sounds "too good to be true"!

    Anybody have any insights?

    Re: Emulators and QEMU (XP-Pro-SP-2)

First, from the dictionary: hardware or software that permits programs written for one computer to be run on another usually newer computer. (My footnote: a computer within a computer.)

Never heard of QEMU so I can't comment. I do run Microsoft Virtual PC 2004 on this Win XP Pro machine and have emulations for Win98SE, Win2K among others. I don't use them much anymore but when I do it works like a charm.

Just be careful of "unknown" products and make sure you have a good BACKUP IMAGE before you try. BTW, the MS product was an acquisition, not something they designed.

Edited to add: I forgot to add a Lounge link. <!post=This thread,384,935>This thread<!/post> gives other product links too.

    Al:

    LOVE the hat!

I'm slow getting up to speed with this: I could use a VM to actually install different versions of Windows, or different OS's, simultaneously, and they wouldn't "see" each other?

    THAT would be great.

That's correct. I don't know about the other choices referenced in the link but with the MS (acquired) product, you can fool around in a VM doing whatever you like and, when you close it down, you can tell it to forget everything you've done OR save it. Really great for testing and playing around!

And Christmas just passed, with the price on that at $179... oh my...

    Thanks

    Al:

If MS has a 45 day trial, will VM's created with it work after the 45 days?

Sorry 'bout that! I bought it in 2004 for about $100 bucks. It must be selling pretty well...

Edited to add: Saving another post on your question about the trial, yes, at least it did when I purchased the product. I bought the trial and never missed a beat when I went "live" with the paid version.

    Al:

Yea, 'cause if you only wanted to create one VM, say a Linux or Win2K VM, paying that kind of money for in effect one program module is a bit pricey...

You'd be better off from a cost standpoint to use images and such of the VM would die the same time as the trial...
