    Scheduled Task Hangs (XP Pro)

I am trying to run a scheduled task.
The task runs a small application that Opens an Access database
links to a remote MYSQL database, does some updates and then shuts down.
    This all works fine.
If I set the schedule to run and the person logged on is the same as the one in the task it all works fine
(Indeed it has worked fine fore a year running each day)
If the schedule is set up to run against another user with the same rights then the task starts
    hangs and eventually times out.
Anyone know why this might be or a solution.
Personaly suspect that it is something to do with Access being invoked as an OLE Object
and windows Classes, but why would it only fail if the logged on user is not the one defined in the task?

It is not a major issue, but we wanted to do it this way because otherwise
the schedule needs to be altered every time the user changes their password, and this method would have saved that hassle.

Can you logon as the alternate user and run the task manually? Does the alternate user have a password set?

Yes, the alternate user has a password

Yes, If I am logged on as the alternate user the task runs OK.

It would appear that it just cannot successfully run when
the logged on user is not the one defined in the run As option.

However, the task does start and run, but does not complete.
It just hangs and then gets killed on a time out expiry option.

    Odd. but very Microsoft!

Do you have XP SP-2 installed (there were several scheduled task fixes in it)?

    Yep.
All patches and SP's are up to date.
I think it might be related to the way that Windows registers Object classes to user profiles.

Re: Scheduled Task Hangs (XP Pro)

    Hi Andrew,
I'm not sure if there is a solution to this. I have customer Access database that I have scheduled to close each morning at 3:00 am (basically to compact - lots of bloat occurs each day) and then another scheduled task to open the database again at 3:20 am. The ONLY way I've been able to get it to work is if the user logged in is the same as the user specified in the scheduled tasks. In this case it's not really a problem as this computer is used strictly for this particular database application and the user who is logged on at startup never changes.

What rights does the alternate user have? Is Office installed for the alternate user?

Same rights as the logged on user, full administration rights.
Also has same software Office 2003, but this was inherited software NOT
installed individually under their ID (and this might be the crunch point)
    especially considering John's point next.

We have actually found a potential solution to this, but ONLY if we copy
The profile of the first user to the second (which kind of makes sense of the Access Rights Issue).
then give them a new password.

If the second users profile is based upon a copy of the first user, then it appears to work ok.

Yep, it's a Microsoft thing. Too B&*^&%%$$ clever for their own good.

I think you are right, BUT see my reply to Jo below.
I think this might be a solution.
The errors in the event log when the process fails seem to imply it is an Access issue.

    BUT... I'm only guessing.
