Windows XP Start Up Hangs (XP SR 2)

I have a HP Pavillion 5170 laptop. On start up, it hangs up at the blue screen with the Windows XP logo (nothing else) you get just before it asks you which user is logging in. I get no error message. It just stops cold. CTRL-ALT-DEL elicits no response. I've tried booting in Safe Mode with no effect. I run Windows update regularly, have firewall and anti-virus protection, and check for spy ware frequently... so I don't think there are external factors here. I have a 6 disc set of CDs that will let me rebuild the system, but not recover the existing one. Any bright ideas?

Can you boot into safe mode? Also, see Resources for troubleshooting startup problems in Windows XP.

What external devices do you have attached at boot up?

I have found that some USB external drives have problems being found on boot up, but will work just fine if turn off until system is fully started.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.
