    pre-1900 dates? (xl2003 sp2)

Is there any way of forcing excel to recognise a string like 31/12/1876 as a date, so that it can get involved in arithmetic?
It seems to fall over on anything before 1 Jan 1900.
Failing which, I suppose I'll have to concoct a workaround (unless anyone has pre-built one for date differences and elapsed intervals involving these 'offside' dates.)
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi John

You got, Excel cannot handle calculations prior to 1900. You will need an add-in.

Have a look at Extended Date Functions from J Pearsons site

Too many shortcuts in my favourites.

    My apologies to John Walkenbach <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>
