    Non-Printing Character Problem (Excel 2000)

Here's a new one on me...I've never noticed before.

When I for example type "Kathy" into a cell, and then press ALT & ENTER to manually create a line break, then type "Johnson" on this new line, it works fine and gives me the following in the same cell.

    Kathy
    Johnson

However, when I use the format painter to copy the format of a cell that is not manually wrapped, it returns it to the format it was previously:

    Kathy Johnson

Everywhere except in the formula bar, where it still shows as:

    Kathy
    Johnson

The problem doesn't lie there however. I don't care what it looks like in the formula bar. What I get now in the cell is as I showed above (all one one line, except with a square between Kathy and Johnson, like a non-printing character you would receive in Word. And worse...it prints the square out, unlike a non-printing charater in Word.

Why? I have found no help for this even though I've searched Excel's help files for something to give me a clue. I have included a picture.

The box character if ASCII character 10, the line feed. If a cell is formatted explicitly to wrap text, the line feed will act as such, but otherwise, the text will not wrap and line feeds will be displayed as a box.
So select the cell or cells, then select Format | Cells..., activate the Alignment tab and tick the check box labeled "Wrap text".
