    CD-RW Query (XP Home SP2)

    Hi,

Each time I write my collection of files (jpegs / word docs etc.) to a CD-RW a 'Confirm Stream Loss' message pops up which says:

The file 'Thumbs.db' has extra information attached to it that might be lost if you continue copying. The contents of the file will not be affected. Do you want to copy the file anyway?

    Yes Skip Cancel

Am I right in thinking the 'Thumbs.db' files are the images used for the thumbnail view?

Have a look at <!mskb=188540>Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 188540<!/mskb>. It's about solving a problem, but it explains what the "thumbs.db" file is.

Thanks for that, I understand what they are now. I changed my folder options to show hidden files and folders. However, I still cannot see the file 'Thumbs.db' in any of my folders. I just tried to write them onto a CD-RW and the same message came up?

What happens if you select "Yes" or "Skip"? I suspect that you may not have the thumbs.db on the CD, but do you really need the thumbnails?

Re: CD-RW Query (XP Home SP2)

I always select "Yes" and also check the "Repeat my answer each time this occurs" box below. I don't understand why I can't see this file on my hard drive even after I've got it to show hidden files and folders?

You have to go a step further to show the thumbs.db file. Starting with Windows 2000, Microsoft introduced a new level of hidden files, what you might call "super hidden" or system critical files. From an Explorer window, go to Tools - Options - View and clear the option to hide protected operating system files.
