Passport and XP home (XP home unpatched)

I have just performed a clean installation of Windows XP home, no patches etc. installed yet. The computer has a WiFi connection to get to the internet via another PC in my house.
I can connect to the internet OK, but I seem to be having trouble connecting to some sites (particularly microsoft windows update) and also, I have tried to set my NET passport on the machine, but when I click "Set up my account to use a .NET Passport" the computer seems to hang for about 5 minutes and then says that it couldn't complete the action.

Can anyone give me some advice on how I can
1: get access to windows update
    2. get my passport account recognised by XP

Any questions, please ask for clarification.

I would first try to get windows update working in order to get the latest patches and fixes to XP.
Check out the FAQ sheet at MS for WIn update problems.

Long ago, there was a time when men cursed and beat on the ground with sticks. It was called witchcraft.
    Today it is called golf!

Many thanks for the suggestion, I was about to do that as aome of the sites I have looked at suggest that these settings may be relevant to all the problems I'm experiencing.
