    Change styles w/o Replacing Normal.dot? (2000)

Our company has a change to make to one aspect of all of the nine Heading styles that are included our blank document template. We would like to make that change without replacing Normal.dot for the entire company since many users would lose customizations (toolbars, styles, etc.) that are stored there. Is there a way to make a change to paragraph styles in Normal via the registry? Can this - or any other fix - be pushed out as part of the login script?

Why would you bother with a style in Normal.dot? Employees should use a company-provided template for all specific documents, such as memos, letters, reports, etc. You should be able to control those templates.

We do have specific document templates which are used for the purposes that you mention, and then some. However, the fact is that there is a good portion of our legal documents that are created from scratch via the Normal template. So, since so many of our documents are based upon Normal we need to make the global change. Any ideas?

    Thanks!

I would strongly recommend NOT creating legal documents from Normal.dot anymore. You could create a CompanyNormal.dot and either make it available in a shared network folder, or push it to all users, and use that for all official "blank" documents from now on.
This won't affect existing documents, but neither would modifying a style in the users' Normal.dot - once a document has been created, styles are stored in the document, and changes in the template won't be propagated to the documents based on it, unless "Automatically update document styles" is ticked in Tools | Templates and Add-Ins.

You can't do it via the registry. A login script such as VBS would be able to do the job relatively easily though and would probably be the best way to do this task.

The basic steps in the script would be:
    - Open an instance of Word
    - Open the Normal.dot template
    - Modify the styles as required
    - Close and Save the template
    - Close Word
