transfer OE wab with folders (OE5 to OE6)

I have searched thru several threads and done a bunch of searching on the net and have found a lot of info about transfer the wab from one computer to the next but have not seen this exactly addressed
here is the issue:

I am moving files from an old desktop (win 98 OE 5.0 PII 400) to a new laptop ( winxp media 2005 OE 6.0)
the import wizard in OE will bring the wab in from a transferred file but loses all the folders. All my contacts are just listed in a lump in the main identity's contacts folder.
Is there a way to keep the folders in the import?

besides the straight import wizard I have tried:
deleted the default wab and backup, renamed the copied the old wab to the default file name in OE6 and pasted it into into the location: CocumentsandsettingsmymachineApplicationDataMicroso ftAddressBookmymachine ( where the address book was)

I can then open that pasted in wab via Win Explorer but when I open address book via Programs>accesories or in OE it reverts back to the default (ie empty) wab
When I paste in the old renamed wab 2 wab files are pasted in for some reason even though I only copied one. One is the wab I am trying to import and the other is the default

What can I do beside totally recreate my folders all over again.

Back from a long road trip.

Of course, I have tried that method already and that is when I discovered that I had problem.

The problem is that the WAB imports fine except that all the folders that I had organized it into over the years are no longer present.
OE just lists all the addys as one long list.

I have been able to copy the old address book to my hard drive and use it as an isolated file, but not thru OE.


I have done extensive searching and not found a solution to this problem except to totally recreate all the folders in the new WAB and transfer the contacts to them. this is exactly what I have wanted to avoid.

I still hold out hope that somebody out there might have seen this before and have workaround.

Can you post a screenshot of what you are trying to accomplish ?? I'm assuming that when you say your "contacts folder" you mean the Contacts list that is displayed below the Folders list on the left side of the screen.

I was just rereading your original post and wondered why you can't get your address book to work with OE. You might have copied the file incorrectly. I always move an old address book manually and never use the wizards. The address book is located in C:>Documents and Settings>My User Name>Application Data>Microsoft>Address Book and is called My User Name.wab. When I moved my old address book on to my new system I first changed the name of the existing address book to My User Name_old.wab and named the file I was moving in My User Name.wab (the name of the existing address book before I changed it). Both files still exist and when I open my address book in OE it opens the one I moved in. I don't organize my contacts into folders, so I can't address why that format doesn't seem to be transferring over for you.
