    Shapeless Flowchart? (XP Pro)

I need to create a simple (or maybe not so simple) way that will allow someone to answer a question, and then based on the answers given provide either another question, or provide a result or answer. I'd like to have the answers appear in a pulldown so that the answers are only limited to what I want them to be. I guess I'd liken it to a shapeless flowchart.

For example, the first set of question would be:

    1) Do you like sports? (There would be a pulldown with a selection of "Yes" or "No".)

If the answer is "Yes", then the next question would be:

    2) What kind of sports do you like? (There would be a pulldown with a selection of "Baseball", "Football", "Basketball", or "Hockey".

If the answer is "Baseball", then the next question would be:

    3) What is your favorite team? (There would be a list of baseball teams in a pulldown)

And the questions would continue as needed. Obviously, if the answers to Question1 above was "No" there would be a different type of question, and if the answer to Question 2 was "Football", the next question would have an "answer" list of football teams.

If it's simple to do, I'd appreciate it if someone pointed me in the right direction. I'm hoping to stay away from Macros, but if that is my only choice, that's fine.

    Thanks in advance.

One way to do this would be to list all of the questions in the cells down a column, say column A. For example, A1 would contain question 1 (Do you like sports?). Then cell A2 would contain the question if the answer is Yes, and cell A3 would contain the question if the answer is No. This would continue down the column. In column B, you could use Data Validation (select Validation from the Data menu) to set up a list of the appropriate answers for the question in column A of the same row. The list of answers could be set up on another sheet in the same workbook, and the list would actually be two columns, the first column would be the answers, and the second column would be the row number of the next question when that answer was selected. You would then hide all of the rows with questions except for the first row. Now, here is the part you didn't want to hear, you would need VBA code in the worksheet change event routine to detect when a change was made to the answer cells. That code would then do two things. First it would see if an answer cells higher than the last answered question was changed and take whatever the appropriate action was if it was. If the cell being changed was lower in the list, then the code would find the answer in its list and get the row number of the next question and unhide that row.

    Thanks for the quick reply.

I also thought of another possibility. Would be to possible build a "web" page that had all these options. I just need it to be self contained.

I can post this over in the IE page if you need me too.

I'm sure you could, but since I don't do WEB pages I can't say for sure nor can I say if it would be simpler (this is the Excel forum <img src=/S/yep.gif border=0 alt=yep width=15 height=15> ).

If you're wanting to steer clear of macros, my guess is that you're wanting to steer clear of writing code. With that in mind, you're much better off sticking with an Office application in my opinion, as writing something like that for a web page would inevitably involve the use of a scripting language.

Possibly the best of both worlds would be to create a Data Access Page (DAP) in Access - this essentially is a web page with an Access back-end. Of course, you'd need to have some knowledge of Access to achieve this; the Microsoft Knowledge Base articles mentioned in <post:=535,428>post 535,428</post:> may be a good starting point.

    Hope this helps,

If at first you do succeed, you&#39;ve probably missed something.

I suppose this could get quite involved if there are a number of questions...but can use Indirect function for both the questions and for the pull downs (using Data Validation). Small example that only goes 2 questions deep is attached
