    laptop battery won't hold charge

A fellow I am helping recently bought an ACER laptop. The literature says his battery should run the system for 4 hours. He says he is lucky if it lasts 30 minutes. The tech where he bought it is saying that because he has a large screen and has lots of programs, that the battery does not last as long.

The tech supposedly gave him a different battery but it did not resolve the problem. What could be using up all of the battery is such a short time?

Get them to charge it so it is full and use it until it runs down completely to zero. Try to reboot until there is absolutely no life left in the battery and then charge it up and repeat.

This normally gets rid of "battery memory".

A colleague had an ACER and it lost battery power quickly but the method above did lengthen the battery charge. Sometimes by having the laptop attached to the mains causes this continual recharging that causes this memory effect.

    John,
I agree that battery memory would probably not be the problem. Older "NiCads" were notorious for having memory effect, where you could try recharging for hours and never get the battery voltage up over the memory level. This applied to all devices like cell phones, cordless phones, remote opener devices, etc.
Jezza's method was indeed the way to blow away the memory.

I might suggest another source of the problem. Possibly the CHARGER for the battery is defective and not capable of charging to full voltage? This would usually have to be checked by a competent tech with the right tools to check same.

I doubt that battery "memory" would be the problem here, as lithium ion batteries do not suffer from this syndrome (the old nickel cadmium batteries certainly did), but your friend has nothing to lose by trying the suggestion offered by <!profile=Jezza>Jezza<!/profile> . I think it more likely that it might be either a faulty battery (but that's not likely as he already swapped in a new battery) or (as the Acer tech indicated) it is a combination of the large screen and whatever programs your friend is running.

There are many different power schemes that can be used to save energy while the computer is running on battery power. For example, power to the network adaptor, the CD drive, the wireless adaptor, usb ports, etc. can be disabled while on battery. The lcd brightness (particularly if this is a 17" screen) and the cpu speed can also be scaled down while on battery. I'd certainly be tempted to try some of these additional power schemes and see what happens. Battery life estimates by any manufacturer tend to be on the optimistic side, but 30 minutes is not unheard of if every component is running at full power.

Good suggestion Bob <img src=/S/thumbup.gif border=0 alt=thumbup width=15 height=15> . I should have remembered that one as my son had a charger problem a few months ago.

You might check the Acer web site to see if there is any updates to "Charging" software.
I know that with our Sony VAIO's there has been several updates.

Also note that if you have upgraded the OS, ie. 98 to XP, then the charger software will need to be a different one designed for XP.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.
