    Powepoint Formatting Problems (2002/SP3)

The company where I work is migrating to Office XP SP3 from Office 97 SR2.

Several users who do alot of organization charts in PPT are having formating problems. For example:
The formatting does not stay the same when making changes. When you click on a chart to make revisions, you lose whatever formatting was originally in the chart (i.e., chart layout, background color, font style, font size, box style, size, color, etc.). When you want to make even a small change in a chart already produced, you basically have to redo the entire chart to keep it consistent with the charts already created.

Are some features or settings that need to be turned on/off? I thought I had heard that PPT 2002 was buggy andor a different product from what was in PPT 97. Is that true?

Are there any workarounds or alternative products?

The users want to go back to PPT 97 but my management won't be too keen about doing that (but it is a possibility especially if this inquiry turns out negatively).

    All suggestions appreciated. TIA.

    Jimmy Lee

Basically, the Organization Chart application in Office XP is a complete overhaul, so there may well be incompatibilities. There is one very important feature to be aware of: by default, AutoLayout is ON. Everyone should turn this OFF, otherwise a carefully designed layout will be undone the next time something is changed. AutoLayout can be found in the Layout dropdown list on the Organization Chart toolbar.

Also see Problems with Organization Chart (OrgChart).

I have only done this with Microsoft Photo Editor, so I am not sure about this advice.

One suggestion I could make is to get the Office 97 CD and run the installation. Choose the custom installation option and then tick only the MS Organisational Chart addin. (This is what I do with MS Photo Editor as it is not on the Office XP/2003 Suite). Once the installation is done, you should be able to open PowerPoint XP and go to the INSERT - OBJECT menu. Get the reference for MS Org Chart and it will activate this add in so that you can still use the original (and better in my opinion) program to generate org. charts.

    Cheers

I don't think the older version of Organization Chart will be able to do what Jimmy Lee wants to do either.

I didn't note in the original post that Jimmy needed any advanced customised formatting? <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>
The older version gives more options than the new integrated org chart feature in XP anyhow. If push comes to shove...he can always invest in the stand alone version of MS Organisational Chart which provides further features and formatting!
