IF does not return what is expected (Excel 2003)

    Hi

A Cell named sgpcheck contains =HLOOKUP(Market_Sector,Market_Sector_Table,Mst_GP, FALSE)which evaluates to 55%

A Cell named sgptotal contains =IF(N11=0,"",N14/N11) which currently evaluates to an empty cell.

Therefore (sgptotal is less than sgpcheck)

I want to show whether "Below Target" or "On Target"

I have tried =IF(sgptotal<sgpcheck,"Below Target","On Target")based on this I would expect to see "Below Target",but I get "On Target" instead of "Below Target"

    Any suggestions please

No, it isn't. sgptotal is "", not 0. Excel considers text values to be larger than numeric values. You could use the formula

    =IF(N11=0,0,N14/N11)

    for sgptotal.
