Direct file transfer between 2 pc's

    Hi all,
I would like to transfer a large volume of info from my home PC to my laptop. I do not have the conventional (pin) lap link cable, but thought of using a network cable that i got from my office. Can anyone guide me through the steps to link the two PC's and enable file transfer. I am not a network genius, so please be gentle!
    Tx
    Regards,
    Rudi

Now that we're in the proper forum, you could search here and see that this question or one similar has been asked many times. Just for starters, see if this helps: How-to: Simple 2 Computer Network wo/hub

I forgot to say this when I posted the link and I hope you don't take offense. Be sure you have a crossover cable and not a "standard" ethernet cable. The linked page has another place where they talk about the cable, in case someone wanted to make his own. You should be able to tell by holding the two ends next to each other and examining the placement of the colored wires within.

    No offense taken at all!

Tx for the information. I do have a cross over cable. The wires are coloured green, orange and blue and they corrospond to each other.

I don't mean to sound like "Chicken Little" but that sounds like a straightthrough cable. Take a look at the pictures here: Ethernet Cable: Color Coding Standard

OK hang on, this is becoming tech-like!!! I agree with you. After detailed inspection I have a Straight-Through Ethernet Cable. Is it NB to have a crossover? Will file transfer not happen without Crossover Cable?

Re: Direct file transfer between 2 pc's

A crossover cable is required to connect two computers directly without the use of a hub. You could buy an adapter but that seems like a waste if you can find a crossover at work that you can borrow.
