Unable to Subtotal in a Data List (Excel 2003)

I'm using a very good step-by-step Shelly Cashman training manual with their final (end of chapter) data list file opened. The manual instructs me to sort on an appropriate field then click a cell outside the list, then choose the Data menu, Subtotal option. This option is available but clicking it gives the error "The command could not be completed by using the range specified. Select a single cell within the range and try the command again". I'm assuming the range they're talking about is where the data is in the list but, no matter what cell or cells I choose in the list, the Subtotal option is always dimmed. Any ideas what I may be doing wrong? Has the book missed a step? Thanks in advance for any info you can provide.

Re: Unable to Subtotal in a Data List (Excel 2003)

As far as I know, the new List feature only allows for a row total at the bottom of the list (Data | List | Total Row). It does not support subtotals within the list. If you need those, convert the list to a range (Data | List | Convert to Range).
