Numbering in TOC (2003)

    I need a table of contents where the first level is not numbered and the second level is. Word used to format the TOC this way, but I can no longer find a way to number some levels and not others. I feel like there has to be a way, and I'm just not finding it. ???

    Do you mean specifically in the TOC, or do you want to number the level 2 headings in the document, but not the level 1 headings?

    I mean in the TOC. For example:

    CHAPTER 1 (first level not numbered)
    645.001 Applicability to rules...........................3 (second level with page numbers)

    Press Alt+F9 to display field codes. You TOC should now look like

    { TOC o "1-3" h z u }

    (details may vary). Insert a switch
n 1-1
before the closing bracket:

    { TOC o "1-3" h z u n 1-1 }

    Press Alt+F9 to hide field codes, click in the TOC and press F9 to update it. Page numbers for level 1 should now be suppressed.
