Fonts Look Terrible

A friend was attempting to install USB drivers when he apparently blew out his video drivers leaving him with the choice of 2 or 16 colors. The unit is an older Gateway Solo lap top running windows 98. I downloaded video drivers from the gateway site for the model and serial # of this unit and installed them. At the start of the install, a warning came up that this was not the driver designed for the video card but did I want to install anyway. I went ahead with the install since the serial # pretty much identified the unit and the color came back. Now I get 16 color, 256, 16 bit or 24 bit color.
However, the text is bad. Vertical lines in the letters seem to bleed making wide lines and narrow lines. Pictures seem OK though not very sharp. Attached is a graphic of some text in Word along with the Word menus. It doesn't appear to matter whether the text is in an application or on a message box, menus, they are all distorted in this way. If you drag the text horizontally, the vertical lines change in thickness.
I tried downloading the Win95 driver instead of the 98 w/no difference, Changed fonts with no difference. I read through the gateway site with no luck and the owner maintains the text was clear before. I hope someone can give me some suggestions of what to try next.

The first thing I would check is to ensure that the resolution is set to the native resolution that the laptop can display. Since you did not provide the model number, I can't say what that is, but it's likely 1024x728.

Mark, thank you so much for your help. Thats all it took. I have no experience with lap tops and did not know about their native resolution. When I helped my friend with his desktop computer in the past, he always preferred the 800x600 setting because he could see it better so I never thought of trying the higher resolution settings. The text now looks as it should. Thanks Again.

You're quite welcome. Just remember, this applies to any LCD/flat panel display, and not just laptops. I think this means that your friend owes you a beer now!
