Viewing Images in Incoming Emails (Outlook 2003 SR2)

I have just had to reload my notebook (running XP Pro SP2 with Outlook
2003 with all updates inc SP2) and whilst everything else in Outlook
looks fine, I cannot get the images to display in incoming emails.

I have tried playing with the parameters but still can't get the
    images to display.

Currently Change Automatic Download Settings is set to off (i.e. both
    tick boxes are empty)

I suspect I have a problem with the system accepting the change of
parameters but it could be something else in the security settings
    somewhere.

    Any pointers would be appreciated.

    Thanks and regards

    Bob

Are these images within the body of HTML emails, or attachments?
If within the body, what are you seeing in place of the images?

(You do not need to enter carriage returns when making a post - word-wrap is automatic.)

    Thanks Leif

I am using HTML and it is the images embedded in the email (not attachments). I just see a box with an x in the top left hand corner.

BTW the CrLf's came when I copied the post from my local machine - sorry about that

    Regards

Do you know if the images are linked to somewhere on the internet rather than embedded in the email? (You should be able to tell by the size of the email.)
It rather sounds like you may be viewing the email off-line.

Re: Viewing Images in Incoming Emails (Outlook 200

    Hi Leif

I am uncertain how to tell how big the email actually is but suspect that the images are embedded as links which, when I was running Outlook before my rebuild were being downloaded to display in the email.

I am just uncertain whether it is another setting beyond the download images setting or could it be Norton Antivirus that needs tweaking?

    Thanks and regards

OK - I'm not a user of 2003 so I can't give you explicit instructions, but you should be able to add the 'size' column to your Inbox by right-clicking on the column headers and selecting 'Field Chooser'. Otherwise, with an email open, select File > Properties and that should give you the email size.

You could also check if the images are linked by right-clicking the body of the email and selecting 'View Source'. Look for a line something like:

    <code> </code>

It could well be NAV causing the problem - does this apply to all emails or only from particular domains? - but I think I'll leave that for wiser posters to contribute to!

yes, I have checked, the images are there through links - it's embedded in the html code

Other comments appreciated, but that Leif for your initial thoughts and for clarifying issues that may assist otheres understand the matter.

Are you on Exchange Server? Are you on a Firewall?

Re: Viewing Images in Incoming Emails (Outlook 200

I have Norton Antiworm active and there are firewalls built into my ADSL routers

The settings for Tools | Options | Security | Change Automatic Download Settings are currently all ticked on, but it doesn't appear to make a difference if they are not ticked either

The interesting thing is that it all worked before the rebuild so the external firewall looks to be a non-issue IYGWIM

Quick thought - if you extract the url of an image in the HTML, can you paste it into the address bar in IE and view it?

When I click on them, I get a browser windo open and the mail is displayed - I just want the images to be displayed in the preview window lol

    Thanks

<img src=/S/scratch.gif border=0 alt=scratch width=25 height=29> I'm out of ideas, but perhaps you should also check the Multimedia and Security checkbox options in Internet Explorer under Tools | Internet Options | Advanced to see if there are any problems.

Re: Viewing Images in Incoming Emails (Outlook 200

    I can't see anything obvious

What I have discovered is the following:

With the Change Automatic Dowload Settings set to on (all ticked), I get a display of Click right mouse to download pictures. When I right mouse, there is a change in that the click right mouse display disappears but there is no obvious change to the actual content display.

I have also noted that some of the picture boxes have embedded links whilst others don't but they all have the X in the top left hand corner.

I must say that I am getting resigned to not seeing the full emails again

    C'est la vie

I wonder if it is something in Outlook SP2 which wasn't loaded on my previous version of Outlook?

Did you also check, FWIW, that your graphic file associations for jpg, gif, and png are all to Internet Explorer? As I said, I'm out of ideas, but here's a few hours reading if you want to pursue these:
