Sorting linked data (Excel XP)

HI,
I have a table of employee info. The salaries in the table array are linked to another sheet. I notice what when I try to sort the salaries, it does not sort this column, yet all the other data in the table sorts??? Why is this?
Tx

We'd have to know more about the links. Could you post a small sample workbook? Replace sensitive data with dummy data.

This is weird.
In the attachment, you cannot sort the salary in column C (if the source list is on the same sheet!)
If you cut the source list to sheet 2, then I CAN sort the salary column on sheet 1.

Why is this??

Re: Sorting linked data (Excel XP)

That's due to the nature of the formulas in column C: the formula =G2 does not connect the employee in column A in any way to the same employee in column F. It remains =G2 after sorting. If you use

=VLOOKUP(A2,$F$1:$G$5,2,FALSE)

etc. instead, the salaries will sort with the rest of the table.

Note: if you use absolute references =$G$2 etc., the salaries will also sort correctly, but there is no connection between the employees in the two tables, so if you change the names in one of the tables, the formula will return an incorrect result.

Thanx for that clear explanation.
Understand perfectly.
Cheers
