    Automatic Updates Repeat

I'm sure each automatic update has it's own reason for going awry, but where does one start to trouble shoot the issue. I have two servers (2000, 2003) and one Win2K workstation that repeat over and over the updates. All of the repeating updates are different, but for Outlook Express 6. The most recent KB823353 on Win2K. All MS patches are applied to all machines. I have gone to the horses mouth (microsoft.com) and search and applied updates from the web (same update that is in the system tray again). Reboot (even though not prompted) and the update returns. OE is not used on any desktops, and sure isn't used on the servers, so where/why does an update keep saying it is installed successfully (in event log) and keeps downloading itself again for installation? Where does one find this update process documented so it can be stopped.

    Re: Automatic Updates Repeat

You say that OE is not used on any of the desktops or servers, but to read newsgroups from IE (or if you enable the News option in Outlook), the newsgroup reader from OE is used. Since IE is a part of the OS and IE uses OE to read news, it really is a required update. I'm not sure however, why the MS update wants to keep repeating the same download.

Try going to Microsoft Update and then click on the 'Get help & support' link.

If you want to update your machines locally, run the Windows Update from APPWIZ.CPL (Add new programs | Windows Update), rather than from IE.

If you want to update your machines remotely, download all required updates and apply them from the network location. Use Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (version 1.2.1 or 2.0) to determine which updates are needed.

Depending on the size of the network you are maintaining, check out Windows Server Update Services. It is <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15> and works pretty well.
