    ASP.NET 1.1 not running (Visual Studio.NET 2003)

It has been decided where I work that our Access databases are going to be transitioned into SQL Server backends and future development of out database frontends are going to be developed in .NET. Some of the Access databases we are currently using are very large and we have grown in user numbers and the future will be web enabled databases.

I am completely new to Visual Studio.NET and I am going to start some training classes in a couple of weeks. To get a little head start on the classes I purchased a Microsoft Step by Step Visual Basic.NET book. I am working on an exercise where you build a Web page application. When I try to create a new ASP.Net application I get the following message:

Visual Studio.Net has detected that the specified Web server is not running ASP.Net Version 1.1 you will be unable to run ASP.net web applications or services.

I wanted to create a localhost on my individual PC for practice purposes.
I am trying to create the new application at this location :
    http://localhost/filename

I have IIS installed and created a small test web page that I saved in C:Inetpubwwwroot that I can display in Internet Explorer using the above address so IIS is working.

I have searched Woody's and the Knowledge Base at Microsoft and I must not be using the right keywords. Any help or reference to previous posts or articles would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like IIS doesn't recognize ASP.NET. This can often happen if you install IIS after installing the .NET SDK or Visual Studio.NET.

You can fix it by reinstalling the .NET SDK or Visual Studio.NET OR you can run a simple command-line application:
    c:windowsmicrosoft.netframework<yourFrameworkVersi on>aspnet_regiis.exe -i

    See this MSDN article

    Mark,

Thank you so much for the help. The command line worked perfect and it started right up. I did have some problems with installing the prerequisites when I installed Visual Studio.NET. I don't have Front Page on my work PC and it did not want to install Front Page extensions. I found a solution in the install notes with the software. It is entirely possible I installed things in the wrong order.

    Hi Carla,

I'm glad that worked for you. As far as I konw, the FrontPage extensions are not required for working with .NET. I believe they are installed by default on my development machine, but I never use them. Did you find some information that says that the application or extensions are required?

    Mark,

Much to my discomfort the IT supervisor decided to do the Visual Studio install on my PC for me. He did not read any documentation before he started through the process. I usually read all the documentation prior to using a new software, but he uses the click and pray strategy. At the second CD the install would not let you go furthur unless you have Front Page extensions installed. They had to be installed from the latest service pack from Windows XP Professional. I found the information on how to do this on the CD that came with Visual Studio.net. I have been unable to find the document that had the instructions. I printed it out, but I think it was picked up with install disks. I will see if I can retrieve it sometime today and will send it as an attachment.

    Mark,

I could not find the document, but I found the section on Front Page Extensions in the VS.Net Help files in the section on Software Requirements. I have wondered why you need Front Page Server Extensions if you are not using Front Page as a development tool?

    Installing Internet Information Services
You must have IIS installed and FrontPage Server Extensions (FPSE) installed and configured in order to create local Web applications and XML Web services. If you did not install IIS when you installed this product, follow the steps listed in the table below. Once you have installed IIS, you must repair the .NET Framework installation.

Whoops - Looks like I was mistaken about the FP Server Extensions.

    Glad you've got it all sorted out now! <img src=/S/cheers.gif border=0 alt=cheers width=30 height=16>

    Mark,

I had the same problem and finally fixed it and I didn't even have to go whining to the system administrator! Thanks so much! <img src=/S/joy.gif border=0 alt=joy width=23 height=23>
