    WMF issue viewpoint

Here's a good article about the latest Windows security issue and the on-going speculation about the original intent of the code. See Mark's Sysinternals Blog: Inside the WMF Backdoor.

    Re: WMF issue viewpoint

Whew! Talk about MS-phobia (Steve Gibson's that is). I must have come across half a dozen examples of MS file formats that contain (incomplete or inappropriate) support for API calls that appear to have no relevance. I'm sure many of their programmers followed the fairly standard IMBUSD* practices of the time, like many non-MS programmers did. More often than not, you don't know what future demands/ usage the format might be called on to support, so often the philosophy was to toss in anything/ everything that might be conceivably useful some day.
