Damaged Event Viewer (WinXP Pro SP2)

This morning I tried Administrative Tools | Event Viewer, and when I clicked on the System "tab" I received a message that translates to something like "The events registry file is damaged". The same happened when I clicked on the Application "tab".

Fortunately recovering this information isn't important now. However, I'd like to know a) if this registry file can be recovered and what to do for the Event Viewer to log events alright from now onwards. Ever been hit by this?

    Thank you in advance

Re: Damaged Event Viewer (WinXP Pro SP2)

After you receive the error does the viewer still remain open? Can you go to Action | Clear All Events?

From E Page - Windows XP from A to Z

    Event Log

One of the administrative tools in Microsoft Management Console, Event Viewer maintains logs about program, security, and system events on your computer. You can use Event Viewer to view and manage the event logs, gather information about hardware and software problems, and monitor Windows security events.

If Event Viewer reports on startup that one or more of your log files is corrupt, you can remedy the situation as follows:

Disable the Event Log service. Restart Windows XP. Delete the corrupt log(s)

    Yes, the viewer remained open.

I tried the solution you added to your original post and it worked. Thanks!
