MS Update Problem (XP Pro, SP2+)

I have a friend whose PC I updated from WinME to XPPro a few weeks ago. Since she only had a dial-up Internet connection, I didn't install some of the Critical updates available from MS Update. Tuesday her new DSL line got activated, so Wednesday I went over and finished configuring her PC to work with it. Then I went to MS Update and told it to install all the remaining Critical updates, which included MS Anti-Spyware. The indication was that it installed correctly, but I got no Desktop or Toolbar icon. It was getting late, so I left at that point.

Today I went back over there, and checked the PC further. MS Anti-Spyware isn't showing up in either the Programs menu, or in Add|Remove programs. But when I checked installed updates in MS Update, the January edition is supposedly installed. How can I fix this situation?

    John,
Looks like you have an expired version installed. According to MS:

What happens if Windows AntiSpyware (Beta) expires?
Each time the program starts, it checks to see whether the expiration date has passed. Before the expiration date, the program is fully functional. After the expiration date, Windows AntiSpyware (Beta) will cease to run, including scheduled scans, updates, and real-time protection. Also, you will no longer see the Windows AntiSpyware (Beta) icon in the notification area, on the right side of your taskbar.

I realize this is probably a stupid question, but just so we're clear; you're not thinking of the "Malicious software removal tool", are you? That one doesn't hang around when it's "installed" every month by Windows Update.
