    Spacebar Deletes Entries (Word2000, SP3)

"Somehow", as my wife was typing along, she decided to go back up to a previous line and add a space or two to an entry. Imagine her surprise when she pressed the spacebar and spaces/entries began to disappear!
I managed to "fix" the problem by closing and re-opening the document. All seems to be right with the world again. But...I was wondering, how did she manage to re-map the spacebar? I said that she might have hit some combination of Alt/Ctrl, etc., but what?

    Somehow, she turned Overtype on.

Like Rebel said, she probably turned overtype on. This gets turned on and off by pressing the insert key, and can easily be done accidently (I do it myself every once in a while).

You can avoid it by checking the option in Tools > Options > Edit that says Use INS key for paste. Then the Insert key becomes a useful alternative to Ctrl-V for pasting, and it is still possible to turn on and off overtype mode if you really need to by double clicking where it says OVR in the status bar.

Thanks to all. But...I performed a short "test" and I really think "something else" happened.
Using the Insert scenario, text gets overwritten with blank spaces. The difference is that the cursor/insertion point travels to the right.
When my wife had her issue, the insertion point remained in place, and text was "pulled" to the left as she pressed the Spacebar. It was just as if she was pressing the Delete key.
Certainly beats me (doesn't have to be really complicated). But, I told her to save often and we can always exit to try to end Word's/our confusion.

There's an easy way to check: if overtype mode has been turned on, the word OVR in the status bar will be black (normally it's gray).

If overtype mode is not active, a macro may have been assigned to the Space bar. To remove a possible assignment:
    - Activate the Visual Basic Editor (Alt+F11).
    - Activate the Immediate window (Ctrl+G).
    - Type FindKey(vbKeySpace).Clear and press Enter.
    - Switch back to Word to see if the problem has gone.

The only thing that "fixed" the problem was to close and then re-open the document...a good reason to save often. We think that several unknown keys got pressed at the same time, causing Word or the keyboard to have a stroke.
