    Word failed reading (word97SR2)

I went to open a file on my standalone computer this morning and received the i-balloon message below. (1) I thought an i-baloon was informative, not despair. (2) the file in question was undoubtedly saved on a computer on a network, a client site where I was working and saved my document to floppy disk and brought it home and dragged it to my hard drive.

I searched the Microsoft knowledge base and came up with the article below, that is misleading, in part only because it says this problem was fixed in SR2, but also because there is no sign of "Rescued Document.txt" anywhere on my computer now.

Trying to open the document in Corel WP8 results in a fault "This program has performed an illegal operation". Likewise Lotus Wordpro9.

It's not critical, but I'll rename the document for now and bypass my use of it until I can crack it open. And no, I'm not going back to the client site ......

    Message on my screen
    ====================

(i-balloon) Word failed reading from this file (CPRG1.doc). Please restore the network connection or replace the floppy disk and try again.

    MSoft article at <A target="_blank" HREF=http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q179/8/83.asp>http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/ar...s/Q179/8/83.asp</A>
    =============

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Word 97 for Windows. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Office 97
    Service Release 2 (SR-2).

    SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to save a Word 6.0/95 document in Word 97, you may receive the following error messages:

Word failed reading from this file (AutoRecovery save of file_name.asd). Please
restore the network connection or replace the floppy disk and retry.

    -and-

There is not enough memory or disk space to convert this document.

    -and-

Word has lost data due to a bad network connection or missing floppy. Documents
relying on this data are going to be saved and then closed.

The Word document is then deleted and the text of the document is saved in a file named "Rescued Document.txt" in the folder that
    contained the original Word document.

    RESOLUTION

To correct this problem, obtain Microsoft Word 97 Service Release 2 (SR-2).

    Re: Word failed reading (word97SR2)

    Hi Chris,

Rather than the bug the article described, I believe it was due to saving the file to a floppy from Word.

This is one of the primary causes of document corruption due to a scenario such as this:

    - Document is opened from network or local drive
    - AutoRecovery file is created. If no path is established or a vaild Temp folder then Word saves to same location as document
    - AutoRecovery information is stored as Metadata in document
    - Document is saved to a floppy using File/SaveAs
    - Document is closed
    - Word thinks AutoRecovery file still exists (it may or may not) Word attemptes to delete AutoRecovery from same location as document, document is now on floppy, AutoRecovery is not.

What happens after this (or the exact order of the last 3 items) I'm not 100% sure, but it results in document corruption. I suspect it is due to Word's inability to update Metadata information.

There are other similar scenarios with other temp files such as the Owner file ~$*.do?.

The best way to save to a floppy is to close the file, and then in File/Open or Save As, right-click the file and use Send To|3 1/2 Floppy.

I'd be curious to see the file in question. I'm wondering if you can open it as "Recover Text from Any File" and see where the different paths in the Metadata point to.

You can obtain a Zipped copy from <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.vif.com/users/cgreaves/20010626.zip>http://www.vif.com/users/cgreaves/20010626.zip</A>

It does indeed open as "recover", thank you.
