Default Printer for all users (WinXP/SR2)

I have two network printers installed on a machine. How can I make one of the printers the default printer no matter who logs into the machine.

Not sure if the memo you referenced applies to my situation. I should have said that the printer is considered a local printer with a IP address port, not a shared network printer. I guess they are not the same thing. Any ideas?

    Thanks.

I hope one of the Windows experts can help you. This is out of my depth.

    Hello,
There are a couple of ways to do this:
    1) Set up everything that you want to for your profile on the computer, including the printer set up and defaults. Copy your profile to the default profile.

Open up Windows Explorer (or My Computer) select Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab.
Make sure the option for "Show hidden Files and Folders" is checked.
Click on Apply. Click on Apply to All Folders.
    Navigate to c:windowsdocuments and settings
Open up the folder that contains the 'good' profile.
Select all (or alternately, select all except for the documents folder) and copy to clipboard
Navigate to the "Default User" folder and paste into this folder.
Now anytime someone new logs into the computer they will have the setting that you selected for them (including printers).

    2) In the script below, replace "server_name" with the name of the computer and "printer_name" with the name of the printer. Save it as something.vbs and run at startup (either in the startup folder of "all users" or in the registry in HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrent VersionRun):

    Dim WshNetwork
    Set WshNetwork = CreateObject("WScript.Network")
    WshNetwork.SetDefaultPrinter "server_nameprinter_name"

If neither of those fit what need, just reply back and we can take a look at other options.
    Have a great day.

Re: Default Printer for all users (WinXP/SR2)

I don't clearly understand what is the cause of your problem. If you set one of your local printers (network printers connected through IP ports) as default, it will remain for all user profiles.

I think you are talking about roaming users, which printers are installed with their logon scripts and default printer is set with it.
In that case, copy from Server 2003 Resource Kit the file PRNADMIN.DLL and paste it to any folder (better to create a new one) on your machine. In the same folder create VBS file like this:

    '---------------------------------------------------
'Script to set the default printer on Windows XP computer
    '---------------------------------------------------
    Option Explicit
    Dim WshShell
    Set WshShell = Wscript.CreateObject("Wscript.Shell")
    WshShell.Run "regsvr32 /s prnadmin.dll",1,TRUE
    dim oMaster
    oMaster.DefaultPrinter = "Printer #1"
msgbox "Printer #1 is a default printer"
    '--------------------------------------------------------------------

Create a shortcut to this VBS file in
    Cocuments and SettingsDefault UserStart MenuProgramsStartup
    folder.
