    Numbering in WORD 03 (2003 SP2)

    I am having difficulty getting the heading numbering to work out properly in a WORD '03 document. When I go into the View/ task pane I don't see an option for Heading 5, yet, I do have a 7.2.10.2.1 outline number and I have to get it to be a Heading 5 style to be able to create the TOC, of course.

    This document starts with heading 3, which happens to be 7.2.9. I had to break a much larger document into 6 smaller documents and had to break up section 7, as it is huge.
    I know in the past (in other documents) when I went into View/ Task Pane/Styles and Formatting there here:

    Heading 1
    Heading 2
    Heading 3
    Heading 4
    Heading 5
    Heading 6
    Etc.

    But I don't see this now, even when I select the 'all styles' view.
    Can I somehow get this above list of heading options into my new document and apply the right heading levels to each heading I have. All is well with level 3 and level 4 headings above this problematic wannabee level 5 Heading...

    Welcome to Woody's Lounge!

    That's strange, because it is not possible to delete Heading styles from a document (or should not be). What happens if you select Custom in the Styles and Formatting task pane and click Show All in the Format Settings dialog?

    I did this. All the heading listings are weird, like
    1.....1.1
    1......1.1.1
    1......1.1.1.1
    1......1.1.1.1.1
    There is a nornal Heading 3 listed though!
    This all started when I had a 555 page System Design Document that began crashing under updates and users asked me to 'break' it into pieces. I broke it into 6 separate documents by cutting secitons from the master and pasting them into the new separate document....

    Hi Peggy,

    It looks as if something has gone wrong with the numbering of the heading styles. What happens if you click in a Heading 1 paragraph, select Format | Bullets and Numbering... and click Reset?

    That's not possible, as this section 5 document starts with 7.2.9 and no where does it have a heading 1 paragraph....

    OK, click in any heading paragraph instead and try the same. You can always close the document without saving if it doesn't help.

    This has returned my world to normalcy! Yes, I now have
    Heading 1
    Heading 2
    Heading 3
    etc.
    I never knew this trick.
