    Word 2K-Won't Release

I run Word 2000 (9.0.2720) on Windows NT Workstation 4 on a small office peer-to-peer LAN. When Word crashes with a file open, I can immediately restart Word thanks to NT, but Word still thinks the file is being used and allows me to open it read-only. Other than rebooting my system, how can I get Word to release read-write control of the file? [BTW, I can't delete the temporary doc file with a ~ character that Word creates and leaves behind when it locks up.] TIA for any help.

I'm not familiar with NT, but I don't know why you can't delete the temporary file. That's what's needed. Also, use Ctrl+Alt+Del to bring up running programs & see if Winword is still listed. If so, End Task & then delete the ~*.* & the ~*.tmp files.

    Hope this helps.

When this happens to me I do the following:

1.press keys Control Alt Delete - Netware Security window appears
2.click on Task lists button - Windows NT Task Manager appears
    3.Click on tab Processes
    4.Scroll down & locate winword.exe -
5.if in list click button End Process.

You can then fire up word without file locking, without having to reboot each time.

Yes, and sometimes there may be more than 1 Word process.
You gotta kill all of them.

We have a similar problem using Word 2000 with a third-party document manager. When this happens, we ask users to reopen both Word and the document management program and File/Exit from both. This properly closes the document and about 95% of the time allows the user to reopen the original.

Phil is probably correct here. Word (in the form of winword.exe) is still a current NT process. Kill it with the Task Manager and consider upgrading to Win2k -- it appears that in almost every crash case I've encountered, Win2k releases the memory occupied by orphaned process and thus releases the file sharing hold on open documents.
