link PPT chart to Excel (PPT 2003)

I don't use PPT much at all but I do know Excel fairly well. I need help on taking a chart that was made in PPT and export (link) it to Excel such that whenever I want to change the chart, I can go to the data table that's in Excel. How can that be done?

I managed to copy the chart's data table to Excel and can make a chart in Excel but the chart is 90degrees off (the x and y axis are flipped such that what's vertical in PPT is horizontal in Excel. I don't know how this chart was originally created (in PPT or Excel). I attached a pix of the chart as it appears in PPT.

I was able to copy/paste special (as link) back to PPT, but I still have the flipped axis problem.

What am I missing here (besides common sense <img src=/S/dizzy.gif border=0 alt=dizzy width=15 height=15> )

What happens if you select the chart in Excel and click the By Rows/By Columns button on the Chart toolbar, or equivalently, if you select Chart | Source Data... and click Rows or Columns (whichever one is not selected now)?

More info.. I discovered that this chart is a custom type in PPT (I don't know how they made this). I can create the chart in Excel but the xy axis are rotated. I couldn't figure out how to filp them as you said since the "by rows/cols" wasn't available. Attached is my scratch pad Excel sheet where I have the original data, a pix of the PPT chart and two chart attempts by me. The bottom chart (gray) uses a copy of the PPT data table (most of which isn't needed to do the chart at all).

How is this?

I created the XY chart directly from the data and changed the markers and lines to match. Move the legend and removed the Y-axis.

I then added the range from U2:Y4 as new ranges (and removed the listing in the legend). I moved them all to the secondary axis and changed the chart types to "Stacked area" U1:Y1 is the heights for each area.

I added Text boxes for the Low, High, and the "Title".

WOW that' great. I obviously didn't think of doing an area chart and 2nd axis; I was using the wrong chart type. This will help a lot!! Thank you very much.
