Convert Word .doc To Word Perfect .wpd (Word XP SP 1)

I'm trying to save a document I created in Word XP to a format that I can save to a disk and give to my attorney's secretary to edit into a proposal she will be typing up in Word Perfect. I'm not certain what version of Word Perfect she is using and she is basically computer illiterate and can't tell me. The only thing I know for sure is that the documents she has are in the .wpd format. Any ideas ???

I'd save the document as a WordPerfect for Windows (5.x) document. All recent versions of WordPerfect should be able to open that.

Thanks, but I tried that Hans. I tried to save it in every Word Perfect file option available to me and they all produced the same error.

Yes, I see that now. How bizarre! Both the Word help and the Knowledge Base insist that Word 2002 (XP) should be able to save as WordPerfect. I have checked that all conversion filters have been installed on my PC.

Try saving as .RTF instead. Recent versions of WordPerfect can open that format.

Re: Convert Word .doc To Word Perfect .wpd (Word XP SP 1)

I had thought of that too, and took a copy of the file in .rtf along on the disk today. It did open the .rtf file, but displayed a blank screen with no text. I got an error message saying that the .doc file was an unrecognized format and it couldn't open it. I just got a call back from her on my voicemail and she tells me that she is running WordPerfect v6.1.

I'm going to try asking her to change the associations on her system tomorrow and see if associating the .doc and/or .rtf formats with WordPerfect will help. Failing that, I suppose that I'll just have her open the .rtf file in Wordpad and copy and paste the text into WordPerfect. I assume I can do that.

I think RTF support started with WP8.

WP6.1 is a version for MS-DOS from 1995. Perhaps you should save the document as a plain text file and copy it to a 5.25" floppy!

WP6.1 is a version for MS-DOS from 1995

That would make sense. My attorney was just bragging to me the other day about how he hasn't had to buy a new computer for his secretary in 10 years. The one she is using works just fine. I guess she only uses it for a typewriter. I'll try the WordPad workaround tomorrow and see if I can't get it done.
    Thanks for your help.

There was also a WordPerfect 6.1 for Windows, and I expect that's what she's using.

I used WordPerfect 6.1 for Windows for a long time and have now been using WordPerfect 8 for even longer. But note that I've never had much luck pulling up .rtf files (saved from Word) in WordPerfect.

In fact, I just tried saving a file from Word 2002 in .rtf format and opening it in WordPerfect 8. WordPerfect threw up an initial dialog offering to convert the file from Rich Text Format, but when I said OK I got an "Unknown file format" error box.

Re: Convert Word .doc To Word Perfect .wpd (Word XP SP 1)

I suspect that it might well be v6.1 for DOS. While I was looking over her shoulder at the PC yesterday, I noticed that all the file names were truncated and ended with a ~. It might have just been Windows 95a causing this. It's been so long since I've used 95, I can't recall.

At any rate, these two programs do not appear to work and play as well together as advertised. I did email the files to my partner, woh has WordPerfect 12 installed and he was able to open both the .doc & .rtf files in the program's Word mode and save them as .wp & .wpd documents. I also had him try the copy & paste workaround using WordPad & WordPerfect and he was able to create a .wpd document that way. So I'll post back and report on my success or lack thereof when I get back from their office today.

Thanks for all the help and insight.

Re: Convert Word .doc To Word Perfect .wpd (Word XP SP 1)

The error message that you received when trying to save the file as WP61 or WP51 was generated because you do not have the WordPerfect converters installed in your Word installation. Office does not install these during a typical installation. You will have to modify your Word installation and include the WordPerfect converters. Then you should be able to save as WP51 or WP61.

I would have thought that too, but I was not prompted to install the converters. And if you read Hans post 551715 earlier in this thread, having the converters installed doesn't appear to help.

Re: Convert Word .doc To Word Perfect .wpd (Word XP SP 1)

Now, I see that. Sorry. Yes, WP 6.1 would not be able to open RTF either - as I see you have tried. At this point, my only suggestion would be to save the Word document into WordPad and then see - but that probably wouldn't work for WP6.1 either. Just a thought. She really needs and upgrade if she needs to share documents with the rest of the world.

Re: Convert Word .doc To Word Perfect .wpd (Word XP SP 1)

I ended up emailing the proposal to my partner, who has WordPerfect on his system as well as Word. He never uninstalled the version of WP from Dell when he got the system. He was able to open them in WP and save them as .wp and .wpd documents. I dropped them at my attorney's yesterday and she was able to open them. The font was wrong but the content was there.

You're correct about her need to upgrade. I may need to upgrade my legal council if this keeps up !!
