    Centered text off-center (2003)

I've set up a document in which I'm using Word's automatic paragraph numbering (Heading 1, Heading 2, etc.). My problem is with Heading 1, which I've formatted as centered. Each instance of Heading 1 included two lines: The first line reads Chapter 1; then I hold down the Shift key and press Enter, then type the title for Chapter 1. The second line (title line) centers just fine, but the first line sits about a quarter-inch off-center to the left. I've checked the settings in the Bullets & Numbering dialog box, and they clearly say "centered" with no indents. What's the problem?

Do you see an indent if you click in a Heading 1 paragraph and display the ruler (View | Ruler)?

No indent whatsoever. All the markers on the horizontal ruler are flush left.

Could you post a small sample document? You can remove everything except for a problematic Heading 1 paragraph.

Here's the sample, Hans. Thanks for looking into this!

Click in a Heading 1 paragraph.
Activate the Styles and Formatting task pane.
Right-click Heading 1 (it's probably labeled Chapter 1 Heading 1) and select Modify.
    Click Format and select Numbering.
    Click Customize.
Change the Number Position from Centered to Left.
Click OK to close the Bullets and Numbering dialog.
Click OK to close the Modify Style dialog.

OK, I did as you wrote, and that fixed the problem. But I'm confused. Why did setting the text position to "left" make the text appear in the center?

I don't know, really. I more or less assume that having centered text position for the numbering clashes with the centered paragraph alignment, but perhaps someone else has a real explanation.
