Synchronize (Firefox) bookmarks w/ (IE) favorites

<P ID="edit" class=small>(Edited by Jon_Rick on 25-Jan-06 06:25. )</P>I rarely use Internet Explorer now that I have Firefox, but in order to use the favorites folder off the start menu, I need to use favorites (as opposed to Firefox's bookmarks.)

My solution: make my favorites mirror my bookmarks.

To this end, I recently started using FavoriteSync, but the program is buggy.

Can anyone suggest anything they use to accomplish the above?

Thanks.

Re: Synchronize (Firefox) bookmarks w/ (IE) favori

I haven't used any of these, but a quick look through the Bookmarks category of the Firefox Extensions site reveals:

Favorites Converter (export) 1.0.1 is another Firefox extension that may be worth a try, although from the sound of it this is a one-off export tool rather than a true synchronizer.

PlainOldFavorites looks better. This causes Firefox to use IE favourites instead of bookmarks - so no need to synchronise/duplicate.

SyncMarks looks like it does what you originally asked for. It can also synchronise bookmarks with HTML and XML files apparently.

Hi,

Thanks for your response--and the links.

I should have mentioned that I prefer bookmarks to favorites because, among other things, Firefox allows the use of colons in a bookmark's title. So #2 is out.

#3 sounds good, but it's not available for the latest version of Firefox (1.5).

And #1, as you suggested, converts rather than synchronizes.

Sorry to be so picky...

Re: Synchronize (Firefox) bookmarks w/ (IE) favori

I've tried them all, and none work well. None handle any extended character sets at all well, even when all those characters are permissable in both IE and Firefox, and none manage to synchronise effectively. Some delete all your bookmarks without warning, so read the small print.

Of all of them, the Plain Old Favorites extension is probably my favourite, as it then allows one to sync favourites relatively easily with other machines, using any file sync utility, but this obviously falls foul of your desire for colons - wouldn't dashes do?

I have to say that managing bookmarks is my major bugbear with firefox (lack of custom sort order, lack of ease in moving bookmarks around and difficulties syncing being the 3 most pressing), and whilst very inefficient the storage of favourites as individual files had many advantages (file syncing, date stamping etc). Whenever I've moaned on any of the mozilla newsgroups, however, I've received answers along the lines of "not a priority - write your own extension".

My personal favourite is Urlbase 4... "a powerful bookmark and favorites manager for all major browsers. With urlbase 4 you can import, export and synchronize your links from browser to browser or though a powerful easy to use interface. Options to export your links to HTML format or send your link collection by e-mail make it easy to publicize or share your links on the Internet. Management utilities including the ability to validate links and check for duplicates allow you to keep your links accurate and up to date. The interface can be customized and automated to meet your personal preferences."

Re: Synchronize (Firefox) bookmarks w/ (IE) favori

I can understand the frustration, but there are plenty of extensions that sort and manage bookmarks. Users who don't see bookmarks as a priority issue wouldn't want the clutter of additional bookmark-handling routines in the core application. I much prefer the philosophy of a small core application with plenty of add-ons freely available than a big all-singing all-dancing beast that's slow, complicated, cumbersome and contains a host of features that will go largely unused by the majority of people.

I do agree with you though that a lot of extensions aren't all they're cracked up to be - either badly written or badly marketed, or having unwelcome side effects. But that is the nature of freebies, and there's a lot of really good stuff out there too. <img src=/S/yep.gif border=0 alt=yep width=15 height=15>

<P ID="edit" class=small>(Edited by Jon_Rick on 07-Feb-06 17:47. A quick Google search found version 5 available at http://www.terriadev.com/products/urlbase/...loads/personal/.)</P>Hi Alan,

Urlbase sounds good, and I'd like to give it a try, but I can't download it .

Apparently, http://www.metalusions.com/urlbase/files/urlbase4.exe is invalid...

Re: Synchronize (Firefox) bookmarks w/ (IE) favori

I've finally decided that synchronizing is too much of a pain. Plus, the only reason I wanted to do it was that so I could use the favorites folder off the start menu with Firefox. I'll live without it. Thanks for all your help.

Re: Synchronize (Firefox) bookmarks w/ (IE) favori

You can of course simply create a shortcut to your bookmarks.html file, so that you can access your bookmarks from your start menu (but as a web page rather than a submenu). I've had a scout around and the closest alternative (away from the world of Firefox extensions) is a perl script for X-Windows, here: FVWM Forums :: View topic - Mozilla/Firefox bookmarks as fvwm menu

Given that, I'm sure it's only a matter of time before someone comes up with a working equivalent for Windows, or a reliable synchronisation extension.

(Edited by HansV to make URL clickable - see <!help=19>Help 19<!/help>)

I've found http://www.lunarmark.com/
that seems to do the job for me reasonably well.

Hi Waggers,

http://fvwm.lair.be/viewtopic.php?p=5756&a...49b67c8c004a3f4 seems cool, but I don't understand the installation instructions:

<hr>usage:
- edit config
- run from comandline to check
- add to .fvwm2rc<hr>

Do you know how I do this? Thanks a lot.

I'm afraid I have absolutely no idea - I just found it whilst searching and thought it looked interesting and possibly worth a shot - I haven't actually tried to use it myself. <img src=/S/sorry.gif border=0 alt=sorry width=15 height=15>
