enclosure abbreviation (word xp sp3)

We have a strange issue here in that when our users type encl. in a document, they get encl.. It keeps putting in the second period. We can't figure out where this is coming from. We have checked the autocorrect, autotext, autoformat, autoformat as you type. Another curious thing is that it IS NOT happening on my PC or another of our help desk technician's. As far as we know, we are set up the same. We've checked everything against our PC's, but cannot figure this one out.

If anyone has any other ideas, please let me know.

I even checked the registry thinking maybe it was in there. No luck either.

What if you only type encl will it put the second dot, or just one dot?

    Let us know.

AutoCorrect would be the first thing that springs to mind, but you have already ruled that out...

If we type encl without the period, it does add only one. Where the heck is it pulling it from? We've checked everywhere. Now, of course, the solution is to not type the period whenever you type encl but it shouldn't work that way. I want to know why it does it on all but a few machines.

I will try this on one of the PC's, but how could this be an issue with so many machines? I don't know when it started. Some users said they've just noticed it recently and a few have said that it's always done it. We've been on Word for over a year now. I think it must have been some sort of change that was made but I don't know what. I'll keep checking into things. Let me know if you come across anything else.

This entry (encl.) is in my Tools-Autocorrect- Exceptions list. Could some people's machines be set not to Autoformat as you type. Therefore two periods. Just a wild guess.

It is in the exceptions list; however, that is for the letter after it to be capitalized. It has nothing to do with a second period. However, good thought. We did delete it to see if it made a difference and it did not.

Hans, I did go through the steps you suggested and deleting the data key did work. However, it does wipe out all other settings that users had too. Not sure if that fix is worth it or not. We'll have to discuss and decide. I still would like to know why we can't delete just that one item instead of having to go so drastic as to wipe out all user settings.

Anyway, thanks for all your help.

Unfortunately, the Data > Settings value in the registry is a heritage from the earliest versions of Word. It is a binary value, so it's virtually impossible to edit it, so keeping it or deleting it (and thereby resetting a lot of other user settings) are the only realistic options.
