    Problem editing e-mail list (Excel 2000 )

I am using an Excel spreadsheet to build a list of e-mail addresses to use with mail merge. Every time I go to edit an entry "it" wants to send e-mail. So frustrating.
Does anyone know how this can be prevented in Excel?

You mean it turns into a little pointing finger? With the cursor over the address:

    Right_mouse | Hyperlink

and either Edit Hyperlink (if you want to keep it as a hyperlink) or Remove Hyperlink (if you want it as normal text).

Thanx Leif that's exactly right. Your right click is great for individual cells.
Is there a way to format the whole column? I have a lot listed and that's a lot of right clicking. Almost as bad as closing the e-mail editor.

Just tried this and it works:

Create a new blank column alongside your column containg the email address.
Select the whole column of addresses and copy.
Select the whole 'new' column, right_click and select Paste Special
    Select 'Values' and OK.

    That works well Leif. Thanx.
Only problem if a cell is edited back comes the hyperlink! I guess I can live with that but I'd rather not.

    Two other things to try:
1] Precede the text with a single inverted comma - this does not show and forces a text only view.
    2] Use a macro thus:
    Range("A:A").Select
    Selection.Hyperlinks.Delete

Word has an option (under Spelling) to select auto hyperlinks, but I just can't see it as an option in Excel.

Did you format the column as text?

Leif: Thank You so much. I will have to learn more about macros before trying your second suggestion. I appreciate all your help.

Legare: Thanx too. Formatting the column as text has no effect.

Legare: Thanx. The column is Format/Cells/text and doesn't behave as text if a cell is edited.
Had a flurry of power failures here, which is why I haven't thanked you and Lief before.

OK - quick guide to creating a macro.

Tools | Macro | Record New Macro

    Macro name: NoLink
(Add a shortcut key if you want)
Store macro in: Personal Macro Workbook
    Description: Remove hyperlinks

    Click OK

Select the column you wish to remove the hyperlinks from - i.e. if it's column A, click the A column header.
Click on the stop recording button.

    Tools | Macro | Macros

This will give you a list of all macros - select NoLink and click Edit to open the VBA editor. You should see something like:<pre>Sub NoLink()
    <font color=448800>'
    ' NoLink Macro
    ' Remove hyperlinks
    '

    '</font color=448800>
    Columns("A:A").Select
    End Sub
    </pre>

    Edit this to:<pre>Sub NoLink()
    <font color=448800>'
    ' NoLink Macro
    ' Remove hyperlinks
    '

    '</font color=448800>
    Columns("A:A").Select
    Selection.Hyperlinks.Delete
    End Sub
    </pre>

The bits in green are like that because they are preceded with the single inverted comma and are comments only.
    Then File | Save Personal.xls

    Back to Excel:
    Tools | Customize... | Commands
Find macros and drag the 'Custom button' to a toolbar
    Close the customize window.

You should now have a Smilie button on your toolbar. Click it and you will be asked to assign a macro - select NoLink.
(You can also right_click the new macro button with the customize window open and change the image and/or add text to the new button.)

Once you have learned the joys of macros, your life will be changed forever!

Leif. Your'e the best! Many thanx for taking the time to give me a lesson.
Bingo! It works well at converting all the cells that I had edited. Doesn't stop the hyperlink on edit but it sure makes it easy to change all the edits.
    Gotta read up on macros.
