Some sort of lookup and total function? (2000)

I've only just started venturing into the world of lookup functions so forgive me if the answer to this question is obvious.

I have a matrix that includes names of people and the number of hours they're working. The names column has duplicates (the same person can appear many times, but the name is unique). In a seperate cell, I want to find specific people and total up the number of hours they have. I have a suspicion that some combination of lookups, DSUM and/or SUMIF might work, but my experimentation has been unsuccessful so far.

    Something like this?

    <table border=1><td></td><td align=center>A</td><td align=center>B</td><td align=center>C</td><td align=center>D</td><td align=center>E</td><tr><td align=center>1</td><td>Name</td><td>Hours</td><td align=right>

Ah, HA! I was trying to use a two-dimensional range (columns A & instead of just a single column. Excellent!

Thanks, Hans, you're both good and fast!
