IF then COUNT (Excel 2003)

I have some demographics data that exported from a program we use. I'd like to analyze different info in it to return counts on religion, sex, race, etc. but I'm not sure of the syntax. Cause it needs to check the correct column for a value, then count it if it equals that value, then move to the next row in the column. I'm not sure if I need to do a COUNT IF or an IF then COUNT. Any advice?

    Thanks - Sat.

Re: IF then COUNT (Excel 2003)

If cells B1:B1000 contain "M" for Male and "F" for Female, then the formula below will count the number of males:

    =COUNTIF(B1:B1000,"M")

You may also be able to use a pivot table to perform all kinds of counts, but it really depends on the structure of the data.

Ahhh - sometimes the solution is so simple. I forgot about the COUNTIF function. Thanks a million.
