    Format Painter (Word '03 SP2)

I have a long technical document 300+ pages. Not all of the outline numbering headings actually have heading 5 (where appropriate) assigned to them. THE ONLY way I am aware of fixing this so that a TOC can be build properly is to use the Format Painter and go to a heading 5 entry that is correct, apply the format painter, then carry it to the incorrect 'heading 5' entry and apply it. This works, BUT, the WINDOW OF OPPORTUNITY in which I have be alloted by MS is BRIEF. WORD is impatient that the Format Painter ends up being FORGOTTEN before I locate the next problem list numbered item!!! Is there a setting to extend the applying life of the Format Painter? Am I clueless and there is a better way to rescue myself? Suggestions/insights most Appreciated : )

If you double click the Format Painter button, you can use it repeatedly until you click it off again or press Esc.

You can also highlight the new selection and press F4- that simply repeats the last action

You can also use Control-Shift-C to copy the format, and then later use Control-Shift-V to paste it elsewhere. This works very like the format painter, but it does not forget what you copied when you do other things in between.
