'Open New Office Doc' fails for Word (Office 2003 on Win2K)

When I run "open new office document" and select Word Blank Document from the Start menu pop-up I get this error:

"The program associated with the selected template cannot be started, or the program cannot use the selected template."

This error happens with Word only. I can create a new PowerPoint document but when I ask for a new Excel document, nothing happens (no error either). However, I can create a new Word (or any) document from Start/Programs/Microsoft Office/Microsoft Office
. I have not changed the directory/location for the template files (I rarely used Word anyway). This is a legitimate copy of Office and I didn't used to get this error although I don't know when it started to appear.

How can I fix this? It's much easier to go to the Start menu than traverse the Programs list to create new documents. I did a search in the Microsoft KB and found http://support.microsoft.com/kb/185021/en-us but the fix doesn't work. It claims the error is due to setting the "Ignore Other Applications" checked in Excel. I never use that setting but confirmed in my Excel that this was not checked but I still get the error. I narrowed the search to Office 2003 and came up with nothing. I did the Office "repair and detect" but nothing changed. I haven't tried re-installing Office.

    Thnx,
    Deb

I don't know the cause or a solution, but why don't you put shortcuts to Word and Excel in your Quick Launch toolbar? Starting Word or Excel with a blank document is only one click then.

If you have local firewall program installed, check permissions for OSA.EXE to launch WINWORD.EXE or other applications.

Yeh I may have to just do that. I uninstalled and re-installed just Word and saw no change. Another lounger suggested looking at any firewall settings (when I'm online, I'm usually connected via VPN through my employer), but I wouldn't know how to set that (and it used to work). I do have McAfee running all the time.

I may ask my employer's tech support for any ideas but it's probably easier/quicker to just remove those items from the Start menu and replace them with shortcuts.

    Thnx,

Have you already troubleshot the issues dealt with in <!post=this Star Post,197827>this Star Post<!/post>? It may just be that you have a template feature that runs foul of your employer's IT Security. HTH

Thanks for the link to that post, it's very useful to have in our bag of tricks. I did the 2nd step it suggested, "winword.exe /a" and Word launched fine. I'll make my way through the other things later today. For now I took others' suggestions and removed the two Start menu items Open/New Document and replaced them with shortcuts to Word, Excel and PPT.

Hey this thing worked! The post refers to a set of macros that MS came up with (kind of well done actually) to troubleshoot things in Word. You start by creating a shortcut of a specific type (with the /a option) and when you run it, they have some buttons with several options to choose from. I ran the first one which fixed a registry entry. I then closed Word and ran the "New Office Document" from the Start menu (which fortunately was still in my Recycle Bin else I wouldn't know how to re-create it), Word launched just fine, no error.

Thanks for passing on the link to that very handy tool.
